Dr. Smith received his BS from the University of New Mexico in chemical engineering, and his PhD from Johns Hopkins University in chemical and biomolecular engineering. After completing his doctorate, he trained as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Hanna Gray Postdoctoral Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Smith’s research is focused on stem cell and organoid technology that allow for precise re-creation of a tissue’s natural environment in the body. He is working on leveraging organ-on-chip model systems to uncover new biology as it pertains to human development as well as studying how organs maintain homeostasis, become diseased and regenerate.
